In a place of business, safety of employees is paramount. Creating a safe environment elevates openness and transparency between employee and employer. The result, we hope, is increased productivity and morale in the workplace. What we will dive into are 3 steps to take to foster a safe work environment that benefits the organization.

Leaders Champion Change

We’ve all heard, “Change starts at the top.” Leadership has to spearhead safety initiatives and effectively communicate them to the bottom line. By empowering employees to take charge of safety programs, the employer creates an environment to communicate feedback. Establishing goals and rewarding behavior motivates employees to meet expectations.

Back to the Basics

Training experienced employees periodically is just as important as training new employees. What we want to do is continuously update training programs with new risks and changes in procedure. Things to consider are ways employees can identify potential hazards as well as the process in which they can report them. Regularly auditing the workplace and asking for feedback are practices that can be used to mitigate potential hazards.

Post-it!

Clearly communicating guidelines in the workplace can offer a sense of security for employees. How we communicate these guidelines are important. Using signage, sending safety updates, and utilizing practice drills can keep employees informed but more importantly safe.

To Be Continued..

Safety in the workplace is ongoing. It never ends. The safety and well being of each and every employee is the priority. It is the responsibility of the employer to create a safe environment, but by creating a shared responsibility within the organization, we hope to enhance employee well being, reduce risks, and create a business that thrives.
