Charged for Safety: Electric Vehicles

Overview

The Electric Vehicle Safety Training course is designed to provide workers, operators, and fleet managers with the necessary knowledge and skills to operate, maintain, and handle electric vehicles safely in a variety of environments.

Course Description

As electric vehicles (EVs) continue to grow in popularity and become integral to modern transportation and industrial operations, understanding the specific safety protocols for these vehicles is essential. The Electric Vehicle Safety Training course is designed to provide workers, operators, and fleet managers with the necessary knowledge and skills to operate, maintain, and handle electric vehicles safely in a variety of environments. By the end of the course, participants will be equipped with the skills to safely operate electric vehicles, perform basic pre-trip inspections upon EVs, and respond effectively to emergencies related to EV hazards, ensuring a safer work environment for everyone involved.

Learning Objectives

  • Identify and Understand Electrical Hazards in Electric Vehicles: Recognize the potential electrical hazards associated with EVs, including high-voltage systems, battery safety, and charging infrastructure, and understand how to mitigate risks during operation and maintenance.
  • Apply Safe Work Practices for EV Charging and Maintenance: Learn proper procedures for safely charging electric vehicles, conducting maintenance, and working with or around electric vehicle components, ensuring compliance with industry standards and regulations.
  • Demonstrate Proper Use of Personal Protective Equipment (PPE) and Safety Tools: Understand the importance of personal protective equipment (PPE) such as insulated gloves, face shields, and arc flash clothing, and will be able to properly select and use PPE when working on or around EVs and their electrical systems.
  • Respond to Emergency Situations Involving Electric Vehicles: Train on how to respond to emergency situations, such as electrical fires, battery malfunctions, or vehicle crashes involving high-voltage systems, ensuring the safety of both the responders and the public.
  • Comply with Regulations and Standards for EV Safety: Learn about the relevant safety standards, regulations, and codes (e.g., OSHA, NFPA 70E) related to electric vehicles and charging infrastructure, and be able to apply these guidelines to maintain a safe working environment.

Compliance and Certification Requirements

This Electric Vehicle Safety Training course is an awareness course and includes the general areas outlined in 29 CFR 1910.332 (General Industry), 29 CFR 1910.303 (for Electrical Safety-Related Work Practices), and NFPA 70E (Standard for Electrical Safety in the Workplace), as applicable. This course satisfies the regulatory requirement(s). Employees who work on electric circuit parts or equipment that have not been de-energized or who perform testing work on electric circuits or equipment must trained separately as a Qualified Electrical Worker.
