Stormwater Stewardship: Effective Management for a Greener Future

Overview

This course teaches about the various sources of stormwater pollution, the impacts of poor stormwater management, and best practices to mitigate those effects.

Course Description

This Stormwater Management training course is designed to equip workers with the essential knowledge and skills needed to manage stormwater runoff effectively and prevent pollution. Stormwater runoff can carry harmful pollutants such as chemicals, debris, and sediment into local water systems, posing risks to public health and the environment. In this course, participants will learn about the various sources of stormwater pollution, the impacts of poor stormwater management, and best practices to mitigate those effects. By the end of this training, students will be better prepared to handle stormwater challenges, ensure compliance with environmental regulations, and contribute to community sustainability efforts through effective stormwater management.

Learning Objectives

  • Identify Sources and Impacts of Stormwater Pollution: Understand the sources of stormwater pollution, such as construction sites, roads, and industrial areas, and how poor stormwater management can negatively impact local ecosystems, water quality, and public health.
  • Understand Regulatory Requirements: Gain knowledge of relevant stormwater regulations, including the Clean Water Act and NPDES permits, and how they apply to utility work to ensure compliance with local, state, and federal standards.
  • Implement Best Practices for Stormwater Control: Learn and apply best practices for managing stormwater runoff, including proper maintenance and operation of stormwater infrastructure like drainage systems, retention basins, and catch basins.
  • Prevent Erosion and Sediment Control: Understand effective methods for controlling erosion and managing sediment, including the use of silt fences, sediment barriers, and other erosion control techniques to prevent stormwater contamination.
  • Conduct Stormwater Assessments and Maintenance: Develop skills to conduct stormwater system assessments, identify potential problems, and implement maintenance strategies that enhance the efficiency of stormwater management systems and prevent pollution.
  • Compliance and Certification Requirements

This Stormwater Management Training course is an awareness course and includes the areas outlined in the Clean Water Act (CWA), National Pollutant Discharge Elimination System (NPDES) Stormwater Program, and local requirements, as applicable. This course satisfies the regulatory requirement(s).

    Audience

This course is designed for anyone who works with water runoff, landscaping, water management, or other areas where stormwater and other water runoff may occur.
