Course Description
This training is designed for anyone who may encounter fire hazards. Whether at home, at a work site, or in public, everyone needs to know how to react quickly and safely in an emergency, whether it’s electrical fires, flammable liquids, or combustible materials. In this course, participants will learn how to properly select, use, and maintain portable fire extinguishers to fight small fires before they escalate. By the end of this course, participants will be equipped with the knowledge and confidence to handle small fire emergencies safely, minimizing damage, and ensuring the well-being of themselves and everyone around them. This training is crucial in helping prevent fires and ensuring compliance with fire safety regulations in the workplace.
Learning Objectives
- Identify and Understand Fire Classes: Learn to identify the different classes of fires (A, B, C, D, and K) and understand which type of portable fire extinguisher is appropriate for each fire class encountered in utility work environments.
- Proper Use of the PASS Method: Master the PASS (Pull, Aim, Squeeze, Sweep) technique to effectively operate a portable fire extinguisher and extinguish a fire in a safe and controlled manner.
- Fire Extinguisher Selection and Application: Gain the ability to choose the correct type and size of fire extinguisher for specific fire situations, ensuring effective response to electrical, chemical, or combustible material fires in utility settings.
- Inspection and Maintenance of Fire Extinguishers: Learn how to properly inspect, maintain, and ensure the readiness of portable fire extinguishers, including checking pressure gauges, seals, and proper placement in work areas.
- Fire Safety Precautions and Emergency Response: Understand fire prevention strategies, recognize fire hazards in utility work environments, and know when to safely use a fire extinguisher or evacuate to prevent injury or damage.
Compliance and Certification Requirements
This Fire Extinguisher Safety Training course is an awareness course and includes the areas outlined in 29 CFR 1910.157 (General Industry Portable Fire Extinguishers) and 29 CFR 1910.38 and 1910.39 (Emergency Action Plans; Fire Prevention Plans), as applicable. This course satisfies the regulatory requirement(s).
