High Ground Safety: Mastering Scaffold Safety from the Ground Up

Overview

This course provides the basic knowledge and skills to work safely on scaffolds, prevent accidents, and ensure that scaffolding systems are properly set up, maintained, and used.

Course Description

Workers frequently work at height, and scaffolds are often used to provide access to elevated areas. However, working on scaffolds presents significant safety risks, including falls, structural failures, and improper use of equipment. This Scaffold Safety Awareness Training course is specifically designed to ensure that workers understand the proper safety procedures when using scaffolds, minimizing the risk of accidents and injuries. By the end of this training, participants will be equipped with the knowledge and skills to work safely on scaffolds, prevent accidents, and ensure that scaffolding systems are properly set up, maintained, and used. This course is crucial for anyone who regularly performs tasks at height, ensuring that they are well-prepared to avoid scaffold-related hazards and protect themselves and their colleagues from injury.

Learning Objectives

  • Recognizing Scaffold Hazards: Equip participants with the knowledge to identify common scaffold-related hazards, such as instability, falls, and structural weaknesses, and understand how these hazards can lead to accidents.
  • Proper Scaffold Assembly and Disassembly: Educate employees the correct procedures for assembling, securing, and disassembling scaffolds safely, ensuring they follow established guidelines to prevent accidents and ensure structural integrity.
  • Use of Personal Protective Equipment (PPE): Ensure participants understand the types of PPE required when working with scaffolds, such as fall arrest systems, helmets, and harnesses, and how to properly use and maintain this equipment.
  • Safe Work Practices and Procedures: Instruct workers on the safe practices for working on scaffolds, including proper use of ladders, maintaining three points of contact, avoiding overloading scaffolds, and recognizing when scaffolds need repair or inspection.
  • Emergency Response and Rescue Techniques: Provide training on how to respond in case of an emergency, including fall incidents or scaffold collapse, with a focus on how to quickly and safely rescue injured workers and seek immediate medical assistance

Compliance and Certification Requirements

This Scaffold Safety course is an awareness course and includes the areas outlined in 29 CFR 1926.451 (Scaffolds), 29 CFR 1926.454 (Training Requirements), and 29 CFR 1926.502 (Fall Protection Systems), as applicable. This course satisfies the regulatory requirement(s). Employees who perform work while on scaffolding must be overseen by a Competent Person* in the subject of recognizing hazards associated with the type of scaffolding being used.
*Per 29 CFR 1926.32(f), an employer designates a “competent person” who is capable of identifying existing and predictable hazards in the surroundings or working conditions which are unsanitary, hazardous, or dangerous to employees. They must also have the authority to take prompt corrective measures to eliminate them. Competency is determined by the employer based on the individual’s training, experience, and knowledge.
