Back to Basics: Safeguarding Your Spine

Overview

Understanding the risks associated with back injuries and learning tools and techniques to prevent them on the job

Course Description

Workers are often required to lift heavy objects, perform strenuous tasks, and work in physically demanding environments. Unfortunately, improper lifting techniques and repetitive movements can lead to serious back injuries, which can result in long-term pain, disability, and time away from work. This Back Injury Awareness Training course is designed to help workers understand the risks associated with back injuries and arm them with the tools and techniques to prevent them on the job. By the end of this training, participants will be equipped with the knowledge and practical skills to protect their backs, reduce the risk of injury, and maintain their overall health while performing physical tasks. This course is essential for workers who engage in manual labor, ensuring they can work safely and efficiently, while minimizing the risk of back-related injuries.

Learning Objectives

Course learning objectives include:

    • Understand the Causes of Back Injuries: Educate participants on the common causes of back injuries, including improper lifting techniques, repetitive motions, poor posture, and environmental factors, and the impact these injuries can have on long-term health.
    • Master Proper Lifting Techniques: Teach participants the correct methods for lifting and carrying heavy or awkward objects, focusing on using the legs, maintaining proper posture, and avoiding twisting motions to prevent strain on the back.
    • Implement Ergonomics in the Workplace: Provide practical strategies for adjusting workstations, tools, and tasks to promote better posture and reduce the risk of back strain, especially in environments that involve prolonged sitting or repetitive tasks.
    • Recognize the Early Signs of Back Strain: Help participants identify early warning signs of back discomfort or strain and educate them on how to take immediate action to prevent further injury or discomfort.
    • Promote Back Injury Prevention Strategies: Encourage the use of stretching exercises, strengthening routines, and rest breaks to support back health, along with educating on the importance of using assistive devices (e.g., lifting equipment or lumbar support) when needed.

Compliance and Certification Requirements

While OSHA doesn’t have a specific regulation solely focused on back safety, it mandates employers to provide a safe workplace free from recognized hazards, which includes those related to back injuries, under the General Duty Clause. This course satisfies the regulatory requirement(s).

Audience

This course is geared towards all personnel who are required to lift during the course of their workday.
